Introduction

The raster layer is a layer type which draws displays a single image. This image may be synthesized as the view changes or may be an image imported from a file, such as a TIFF image. Raster layers will warp their images to match any map projections which is in effect (provided the projection is invertible).

There are a number of special-purpose raster layers:

  • Raster layer - for small to medium-size images
  • JAI Raster layer - uses JAI to handle very large images
  • Multi-resolution Raster layer - uses JAI to display multi-resolution images such as satellite images or relief data

If the JAI plugin is installed, image layers can be georeferenced if the image file contains geographic information. At present, a limited subset of GeoTIFF is supported.
